What Happened to Warhawks Spring Tackle Camp?

Football Canada has mandated some changes to youth football programs that will start to be phased in next year (2018) and be fully implemented by 2022.  These include introducing a gradual progression to full contact/tackle starting at the U10 age group  and limiting the number of full contact practices and games that a player can participate in.
For example by 2022, U8 will be totally non-contact, U10 will be limited to 6-8 contact games per year and 30 minutes max contact per practice session.
In order to be proactive with the upcoming changes, we have determined that Spring will now be dedicated to Flag Football and Fall to tackle football.

We believe that flag football provides the best opportunity for skill development, increasing player football knowledge, emphasizing proper technique over physicality and learning to make plays without hesitation.

What is the Advantage of Flag Football ?

Flag football gives every child the chance to be an impact player and learn multiple positions.
Kids of all sizes can throw and catch the ball, make interceptions, pull flags on defense and run for touchdowns – all while having fun, making friends, and staying active.
Children learn football skills while understanding the importance of maintaining good form and footwork.
Flag football provides more playing time, more involvement in the action and a greater coach-to-player ratio.

In one flag football game, they are going to get many more touches compared to tackle football. It teaches  players the proper way to run a route and what happens when everyone does their job at the right time.
Flag football is a non-contact sport but requires the same focus and concentration as the tackle game on every play.
This gradual progression of skills ensures optimal athletic and tactical development.

What About the Linemen?

A common question we hear is "What about the linemen? How do they benefit from flag football"?
Our answer is that flag football is for players of all sizes and abilities. Every player can benefit from focusing on proper form and technique before introducing pads and hitting.
Many big kids who are pigeonholed to play linemen due to their size in tackle football, never get to touch the football or develop specialty skills, sometimes lose interest and eventually drop out of football.

With flag football , linemen can develop important football skills on both sides of the ball,  as well as learning strategy, reading plays, and building self confidence before advancing to youth tackle.
Football Canada's Long -Term Athlete Development Model has also determined that it is essential to develop broad-based skills and abilities before specializing in one position.

All coaches are volunteer parents and we need your help!  We're anticipating a large number of registrations for Under Armour flag football and we will need lots of coaches!
If you're interested in volunteering to coach one of the UA Flag teams, there is an area on the registration form where you can select Yes or No to the volunteer coach question.
The time commitment required is very low as practice is on the same day as the games.
Under Armour provides all the play books as well as assistance in the skills and drills to teach the players.

Transition to Tackle Football

For those players who are interested in registering for tackle football in the Fall, we will also be providing some optional tackle practices, with equipment, at no additional cost, one evening a week towards the end of the flag season.
Stay tuned for further details on days, time and equipment pick up.
